Resources and Fees
The Sargeant Museum: The Museum research room contains a complete set of reference books, including deed and will abstracts to 1800. Access is available to online serices such as Ancestry.com and a host of online resource sites. Help is available from our volunteer staff during posted hours for genealogy resarch.
Services and suggested fees for using the Sargeant Museum Resources: Most visitors are surprised to learn that it costs The Historical Society approximately $175 per day to staff and operate our museum. Unlike our public library, the museum services are not funded by any government organization and we depend on the generosity of those whom we serve. If your financial situation permits, we ask that you kindly make a gift to us for the portion of the day our staff devotes to serving you while you are here.
Our public Library: Here the Lousia County Historical Society keeps a complete set of reference books, including a set of our publications. These are always available to the public. Use your library card to access Heritage Quest Census data, etc.
Free-The Louisa County Courthouse: You will be able to find wills, deeds, marriage records, etc. in our courthouse. A guide to the courthouse is in the research room and available on the Guest login desktop.
If you need the help of our professional museum staff, we ask that you arrange your visit in advance. Our museum director, Elaine Taylor, is glad to take a few minutes and provide you with suggestions for your search. If you need more than a few minutes of her time or you need access to our archives she may not be available if your visit is unscheduled.
Email Requests: We are glad to assist you with further research if you send your requests through letter or email. If you need us to make copies at the courthouse or research our records, we ask that you consider a gift in appreciation for our volunteer's time.
