  • Music Major Application Form: Admissions for Fall 2025

  • If you want tobe considered for a music scholarship, your completed application must be submitted by February 1, 2025.

    Applications received after the deadline will still be considered for admission, but not for additional financial aid. 

    Prior to completing this application, you should gather the following required materials:

    1. Your Stony Brook ID number, which you will need to complete this application. This is obtained after completing your application to Stony Brook University.
    2. Privately-shared YouTube links to audition recordings for your specific instrument or voice type.
    3. If you do not primarily identify as a performer, you may also submit optional portfolio materials to be considered for scholarships based on your compositions, audio engineering projects, or academic work in musicology. These optional materials might include a scholarly essay, music review, recent composition, etc. You will be given the opportunity to upload these materials at the end of the form.

    Students who submit quality audition recordings and/or alternative materials and perform successfully on their theory placement/musicianship test will be pre-approved for the music major upon admission to the University. In addition, students participating in this pre-approval process may be considered for scholarship offers and the opportunity to study with Senior Performance Faculty.

    The exam is designed to measure a student's ability to hear, remember, notate, sight-sing, and tap musical excerpts. The exam begins with simple exercises and becomes progressively more difficult.

  • All auditioners will be considered for a music scholarship, which are available to music majors. In addition, prospective students in the music major will be considered for scholarships if they excel in the areas of music composition, theory, or history. If you wish to be considered for scholarships in those areas, please submit one of the following optional materials:

    1. Two recent music compositions (ideally with a score and a recording)
    2. Substantial music review or paper on music history or theory (at least 4 pages double spaced)
