  • 2014-2015 CACTUS EDITOR APPLICATION

  • WELCOME! Thanks for showing interest in becoming a part of the 2014-2015 Cactus Editorial Staff. I'm so excited to begin work on this year's edition of Cactus!

This year's edition represents change. I am hiring an entirely new staff: Cactus' approach to design, coverage, and marketing will all be completely new as well. We will also be putting an emphasis on marketing this year. Cactus has been a recipient of a Gold Crown and a Silver Crown from CSPA for the past two years so we are known nationally for stellar yearbook production; it’s time UT students knew it as well.

I’m guessing you’re curious as to what the job is like at Cactus. We have several major deadlines throughout the year. The weeks leading up to each deadline are primarily used to garner content for the different sections of the book. We’ll have work days closer to the actual deadlines that will be used for designing pages and editing stories and photos. Staff photographers and writers make their own schedule and can pick up assignments whenever they would like. Editors receive a salary and staff photographers and writers get paid per published assignment. Listed below are the different editor positions that need to be filled.

Now that you know more about Cactus, here’s what you need to do to apply:

    • Finish filling out this handy online form.
    • Attach a resume.
    • Attach a cover letter. Feel free to get creative. It’s more important to me that you display in your own way that you are perfect for the job, so if five written paragraphs don’t cut it, feel free to use visuals or anything you like.
    • Attach samples of your work. Writing samples, photography samples, design samples- whatever you feel shows you’re qualified. NOTE: Design applicants- it would be even cooler if you could design something fresh. Maybe what you have in mind for next year? That includes mock spreads and a mock cover.

The deadline is August 18, at 5pm. Please make sure you have submitted this form by that time. If something comes up, like technology fails me and this form won’t work, please let me know!

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. If you’re unsure about any of these instructions, I’m just an email or phone call away.

    SECTION EDITOR

Section editors are responsible for the creation of each book section. With the guidance of the editorial staff, section editors will coordinate stories and photos for the pages within their sections. They will be responsible for the design of their section, so should have a strong background in publication design. Section editors should have strong organizational skills, resourcefulness and an ability to communicate ideas effectively. Adobe InDesign experience is required. There are three positions available:
