  • BHRA ADOPTION APPLICATION

  • A successful adoption depends on both the selection of the right basset hound for your household and the understanding of his / her individual caretaking needs. So that we may assist you with this selection, please answer the following questions as completely as possible. All fields are required.

    Thank you.

  • Please note that your first choice may have other applications on him/her that could be approved first.  We work all pplications in a "firt come, first worked" system. Our adoption coordinator will let you know if your selected dog has an application.  You may be put on a "wait list" or you can chose another dog to apply for. We will be happy to help you pick the right hound for your home/family.

If a home visit is completed but you cannot adopt the dog you prefer, your application will remain active for 1 year.  If no home visit is conducted, it will remain active for 6 months.  After that time, you will be asked to complete another application.

If multiple applications are recieved on the same dog, we will reply, by email, to the applications in order.  A reply is needed to that email within 24 hours or will be going to the next application.

  • Routine vet care can cost several hundred dollars a year including heartworm testing and administering a monthly heartworm preventative.

BHRA reserves the right to conduct vet referenes with the above veteranarian prior to adoption.

  • Please read each section below and initial that you have read it, understand, and agree.

  • After you complete the application, our adoption coordinator will contact you at the email address above to let you know your app was received and to arrange a time to discuss BHRA, its policies, and the dog you listed.  Please keep an eye out for emails.  We often use our personal email addresses and reply to your application and be aware they may be filtered directly into your spam folder.  If you have questions, or haven't heard from someone after 24 hours, please email adoption@bhral.org or call our toll free number 1-888-501-BHRA. After two attempts to contact you, we may bypass your application for the next person in line.

BHRA operates on a "first come, first served" basis for all adoptions based upon the order of the applications.  We reserve the right for our foster homes to "jump the line" prior to a home visit being conducted on their foster dog.  If you'd like to foster to adopt, please email foster@bhral.org to complete the appropriate application.

  • BHRA requires that you have a fenced area or yard for the dog, with some exceptions on an individual basis at the discretion at the Adoption Coordinator and the Home Visit Volunteer.  BHRA also requires that dogs adopted from BHRA be primarily "inside" dogs.  They are not to be kept outside in a pen, enclosure, yard, or chained for extended periods of time. BHRA also requires all applicants to have established addresses and residences. BHRA reserves the right to deny any adoption application and/or repossess an adopted dog if this is observed.  If you have specific questions, please discuss them with a BHRA representative before the adoption is processed.

Please initial that you understand and agree that adoption is predicated upon your having a fence or some other similar outdoor confinement area on your property and that at no time will you ever tie, stake, chain the animal in any way to any fixed or growing object or attach the animal to an overhead pulley or runner system; neither will you allow the animal at any time to run free outside a fenced or otherwise confined area. If you do not have a fenced area a strict leash walking commitment is required.

  • All of the information I have provided on this application is, to the best of my knowledge, true and complete. I understand that falsifying answers on this application, or at any other time during the adoption process, disqualifies me from adoption.
