  • Important Information About This Application & A Checklist
     

  • 1. Before you begin, make sure you have applied to WNMU as an undergraduate student. CLICK HERE T0 APPLY
    2. Have you filed a Declaration of Major Form for the BSW Program? If not, please do so through your Mustang Express account. 
    3. Have you submitted your official transcripts to the WNMU's Admissions Office (P.O. Box 680 Silver City, NM 88062)?  Your undergraduate school application can not be finalized without official transcripts, and you will not be eligible for Federal Financial Aid or the Lottery Schlorship    . 

    Below is a checklist that you should help you gauge your progress toward completing this application. As you complete a section place a check mark in the appropriate box. Once you have completed all the sections, hit the Submit button at the bottom of the form. If you are unable to complete the application at one time, you will be able to save your work for up to 4 weeks and return to it later.

    To save your work and return to editing it later, you must follow these steps:

    1. You must use the same computer, with the same web browser (MS Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, etc.) each time you reopen the application form.
    2. When you are ready to take a break on the completing the form, just close the program.
    3. When you reopen the form (same computer, same web browser), the information you entered before should autofill.
    4. Wait until you are ready to send the completed application before you add any attachments.  Attachments will be lost if you close the application and return to it, so just wait and add them just before you submit.

      Please take some time to review the application before you begin the process. It can save you time in the long run.

  • The mission of the Western New Mexico University Social Work Program is to prepare students for culturally competent generalist practice and to promote social and economic justice. 

    The program believes in the promise of every student. 

    The Goals of the Social Work Program at Western New Mexico University are to 

    1. Prepare students for effective professional generalist social work policy practice with individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities.
    2. Prepare students with lifelong learning, including graduate education and awareness of their responsibility to continue their professional growth and development.
    3. Prepare students with a broad social work foundation that emphasizes development of critical thinking skills.
    4. Prepare students to conduct themselves ethically and engage in ethical decision making in order to ensure human rights and social and economic justice.
    5. Prepare students to engage in research-informed practice and practice-informed research to assess, intervene and evaluate.
    6. Prepare students to engage diversity and difference in practice.
    7. Prepare students to integrate technological advancement in their practice.
     
  • Legal Statement
     
  • Social workers’ primary concern is always the welfare of a client. If a student has a record of felony conviction, or of a misdemeanor conviction such as domestic violence, child or elder abuse or neglect, substance abuse, or DWI, this may impact a student"s suitability to practice professional social work. A student must disclose this fact to the B.S.W. program on making application for admission to the program. The student will be asked to supply documentation on the nature of the offense and its disposition. A felony or misdemeanor conviction record will not automatically bar a student from enrollment in the program. The B.S.W. Program Coordinator and faculty will make admissions decisions based on multiple factors including a student"s academic record, suitability to practice social work, and will include consideration of legal problems including the nature and date of the offense, disposition, rehabilitation efforts and the relevance of the offense to social work practice. Students’ rights of appeal, as defined in the WNMU student handbook, will be in effect. Please note: a student with a criminal conviction may be denied licensure to practical social work, even if they have been admitted to the B.S.W. program and have graduated with a B.S.W. degree. Students who have issues in this area are urged to consult with their social work faculty advisor.
  • Mental Health Statement
     
  • Professional self-care is paramount for competent and ethical social work practice. Professional demands, challenging workplace climates, and exposure to trauma warrant that social workers maintain personal and professional health, safety, and integrity. Social work organizations, agencies, and educational institutions are encouraged to promote organizational policies, practices, and materials to support social workers’ self-care.  
     
    Changes to the Ethical Principles section of the Code also took into account that self-care also protects social workers’ capacity to support the values of integrity.  
     
    ETHICAL PRINCIPLE: Social workers behave in a trustworthy manner. Social workers are continually aware of the profession’s mission, values, ethical principles, and ethical standards and practice in a manner consistent with them. Social workers should take measures to care for themselves professionally and personally. Social workers act honestly and responsibly and promote ethical practices on the part of the organizations with which they are affiliated.

  • Narrative Supplement
     
  • One of the most important aspects of your application is your ability to communicate, in writing, that you meet all of the requirements of WNMU Social Work Program. This is to be accomplished through a personal narrative. It is of utmost importance that all materials are written exclusively by the applicant. Any indication that someone else has substantially helped with or written this statement is grounds for rejection of the applicant or dismissal from the B.S.W. Program. NarrativeThe personal narrative should be 6-8 double-spaced, typewritten pages using 12-point Times New Roman font. Please type out each question and follow with your response. Your responses will aid the Admissions Committee in assessing your qualifications for professional social work practice. Qualifications looked for are: the ability to think analytically and conceptually; clarity in self-expression (writing and language skills); responsiveness and sensitivity to diversity; commitment to improving social conditions; and the ability to function creatively, responsibly and independently. 1. How do you account for your interest in social work? In your response, discuss paid or volunteer experiences that support your choice of social work as a profession. 2. The profession of social work is committed to social, political, and economic justice, the alleviation of poverty and oppression, and the reduction of social problems. Address a social problem about which you are particularly concerned. Concisely discuss your understanding of social, political, and economic justice. How do you think you can advance the aforementioned? What experiences or factors have shaped your interest in advancing justice? 3. Describe some of your experiences and achievements in school, work (volunteering or employment), and in your personal life. Include a description of any barriers you have encountered in pursuing your education, work, or personal goals. Indicate the steps and strategies you have used or are using to overcome these barriers. 4. Describe some examples and experiences that demonstrate you can work effectively with individuals and communities that diverse populations (for example, but not limited to people and communities, reflecting diverse ethnicities, racial identities, abilities, socio-economic class, gender and/or sexual orientation. Describe any difficulties you have encountered or that you think that you might encounter when working with any of the diverse groups mentioned above. 5. Social work is a profession that has considerable emotional demands on the practitioner. How do you handle stress and what coping skills do you anticipate using as a competent practitioner? 6. University study provides learning opportunities that require an investment of time and energy. Plan to spend an average of 36 hours per week on homework for a full-time load of four courses. In addition, two semesters of field practica require approximately 20 to 24 hours per week. Discuss why you are prepared to attend school at this time in your life and/or career. Please describe plans that you are making to adjust your personal and professional life in order to successfully participate in : a. The coursework, class preparation and assignments. Academic pursuits require approximately 9 hours per week per course. b. Field practica of approximately 20-24 hours per week for 2 semesters. These practica must be completed at practicum agencies during daytime hours; rarely do practicum sites offer night/evening/weekend hours.

  • References Please list five (5) people you want us to request Professional and/or Academic references from. Indicate their relationship to you and whether the reference is from an academic (current/former professor, academic advisor, etc.) or professional (current/former supervisor, volunteer supervisor, etc.) source. This may include volunteer or paid positions. At least one academic and one professional reference are preferred, including a reference from your current supervisor. Once we have received responses from three (3) of the five references, we will move forward with processing the application. Before listing a reference, please make sure that you contact the person, ask if you can use her/him as a reference, and let him/her know that the School of Social Work will be sending an e-mail requesting information about you. You should also let the person know that you are asking for his/her candid view of you in the reference, and that you are or are not waiving your right to see her/his responses to the questions. (see below)
