CATEGORIES: There will be the following age group categories: Youth: 12 & Under Teen: 13 – 18 Open: Any Age Twin Fiddling: Any Age
Each category will be limited to 10 entries. The contestants will be scored on a point system. The two (2) players wit the highest scores in each individual; category will move on to the final round. Twin Fiddling does not advance to the Final Round.
TIME LIMIT: Fiddlers may play up to three (3) minutes in the First Round and five (5) minutes in the Final Round. If the performace exceeds more than the time allowed, five (5) points will be deducted from the contestants score for each thrity (30) second interbval or portion exceeding the time limit.
CHOICE OF MUSIC: In the First Round, fiddlers may select the music of their choice. The top fiddlers selected to play in the Final Round may play any music piece they choose as long as it has not been played by the contestant in the first round.
ACCOMPANIMENT: Fiddlers may play with or without accompaniment. Fiddlers may not have more than two accompanists. Contact microphone and amplified instruments will not be permitted.
JUDGING: Three judges will rate each fiddler's performance based on the following criteria: degree of difficulty, rhythm/timing, tone quality (function of bowing) and intonation (note fingering and accuracy). Judging is remote, with contestants identified only by number. No judge shall see any contestant or hear an introduction or commentary. No trick fiddling, cross tuning or use of sheet music is allowed.
THE COMPETITION: Check-in: All fiddlers should check in at the Alyeska Pipeline Colony Stage no later than 10:30 am. A drawing held prior to the event will determine the order of competition in each category of the first round. This information will be posted at the check-in area. Indoor warm-up areas will be available at the Colony Stage before the contest begins.
First Round begins at 11:00 AM. Categories will be played in the following order: Youth, Teen, Open, and Twin Fiddling. Category award winners are selected from music played in the First Round.
Final Round begins 10 minutes after the completion of first round. The players will be scored on a point system. The two (2) players with the highest scores in each category will move on to the final round to compete. Music performed in the final round will determine the winner. Scores are not cumulative.
AWARDS:
Preliminary Round - Ribbons will be awarded to the top three placing’s in each category.
Final Round - Cash prize of $250 for First Place, $125 for 2nd Place, $75 for 3nd Place.
