  • RESIDENCE

  • If you are living with relatives, they must be involved in all aspects of the adoption processing. This will include being involved in learning about the breed and they must be present during the home visit.

  • Please be aware that young IGs ARE NOT a best fit for apartment homes, in general. Many of the young IGs that we have in Rescue have been surrendered by individuals living in apartment homes that did not realize their high energy and the potty training issues that they frequently have without access to a fenced back yard.

We recommend older IGs for individuals living in apartment homes as they are typically low energy and usually have pretty good potty habits in place. This being said, not every older IG is a good fit for apartment life, so we may not have a match for you at this time. You may have a long wait to be matched with an IG that will be happy living in an apartment home.

It is EXTREMELY RARE for us to place puppies with individuals living in apartment homes. They require lots of energy outlet, very frequent potty trips outdoors, and typically need someone that works from home or is home during the day to get a good potty routine in place and entertain them which helps avoid boredom and destructive/undesirable tendencies. We prefer that all puppies have a fenced back yard with a house door that leads directly to the enclosed yard. Most puppies also need a youngish, small breed, canine companion.

  • ADOPTION

  • We want to be sure that all applicants are aware of the fact that most Italian Greyhounds are prone to having periodontal disease. They require very good oral hygiene practices and the typical IG requires a dental under anesthesia every 1-2 years once they reach age 3-5. The price for dentals can vary from around $350 to several hundred dollars depending on your location, how long it has been since a dental was performed on the IG, and how many teeth (if any) need to be removed. We encourage all applicants to inquire with their veterinarian to find out what a typical dental runs so you are prepared to budget this necessary veterinary expense. We also suggest that you ask what the charge for extractions are as they can impact the bill significantly. IGs who do not get proper dental care suffer with painful mouths, inability to chew properly, infections that can impact organ health, and eventually loss of the teeth and jaw bone.
