• Builder of the Future: "Pop Up" Gatherings of The Future Is Female Festival

  • Thank you for your interest! This form is now closed. To stay in touch about future opportunities, sign up for our email newsletters.

  • OVERVIEW

Being a "Builder of the Future" is a new option for an easy, simple way to create your own "pop-up" festival outpost for The Future Is Female Festival.

Sign up as a Builder to organize an informal reading of plays envisioning women's futures. Builders of the Future don't solicit their own scripts, they source plays from an online folder of submissions we're collecting. Builders are also not required to make their outposts open to the public (e.g., it can be as simple as a gathering of friends in your living room).

  • Things To Know

    FORMAT:

    • The main thing is to get people into a room together to hear scripts aloud, envisioning women's futures. This can be as formal or informal as you want.
    • Unless you want to, there is no need to rehearse. You don't even have to use actors; if you're a person who is into women's futures, gather your friends and read scripts aloud together. Have fun, promote women, and don't worry about it being formal or uber-professional.
    • Gatherings do not need to be open to the public. If you want to invite friends to your living room to open a bottle of wine and read plays aloud together, go for it. If you want to rent a space or gather at a community center and invite the public, that's great too.
    • Your gathering can include as many or as few plays as you want.
    • You may not charge admission, beyond what is necessasry to recoup the direct costs of your gathering. e.g., If you rent a space to hold a gathering open to the public, you may collect admission to reimburse the cost of your space. Any funds beyond that amount should be donated to a charity and/or paid to your artists. (Basically, be kind and don't profit off other people's work unless you pay them too.)

    SCRIPTS:

    • The Future Is Female Festival administration is collecting submissions of scripts from writers all over the country until February 20th.
    • Once you sign up to be a Builder, you'll receive a link to access the scripts in a Google Folder. It's up to you to then read and choose which to present at your gathering.
    • There will also be a spreadsheet with a breakdown of all the scripts (title, short summary, number of characters) which you can browse.
    • Share and share alike: Don't write a play to read at your own pop-up unless you've submitted it for sharing in the Google Folder.
    • Respect the scripts submitted to the folder. Don't use them for any other purpose and don't send them to others without the explicit permission of the writer.
    • Once you choose your plays from the folder, you are required to notify the writer with a heads up that you are using her script, at least 48hr before your gathering. If she is local to your area, please invite her to come!
    • Each writer has been asked to provide a 50-word bio for herself on the cover pages of her script. Please read these bios aloud or distribute them in printed programs at your gathering, so as to give credit to your playwrights.
