Choosing your Sponsor
You do not journey alone within the Christian community. Along the way, you make ties with certain members who demonstrate in their lives what it means to be a Catholic. During this year of maturing as a Catholic Christian, you should have a “friend for the journey”, a person who knows you and is willing to listen to your concerns and questions about your faith or about the Church. At Confirmation, that friend, your sponsor, will stand up for you before the community, present you to the bishop by name, and witness the anointing with blessed oil. A godparent might be a good choice for this role since your Confirmation will complete your Baptism. Whomever you choose should be a practicing, confirmed Catholic and a role model whose living faith you admire. Your parent cannot be your sponsor.
