• Deferral Request Form

    The admitted students in the following programs/schools may be considered for deferrals:

    • Undergraduate programs
    • Bachelor's-Master's program
    • College of Performing Arts graduate programs 
    • New School for Social Research master’s programs (excluding those offered fellowships)
    • Parsons Paris
    • Parsons School of Design
    • Schools of Public Engagement master’s and graduate certificate programs

    Deferral to spring entry is not available for Parsons Paris.

  •   Deferral Terms

    • All deferral requests are subject to approval by the director of admission.
    • Students granted deferrals must submit a $500 deposit to reserve their seat in the incoming class ; including those previously permitted to accept admission without a deposit. (Students who are seeking a deferral due to financial reasons are advised to discuss their situation with The New School Financial Aid Office before remitting the $500 enrollment deposit to reserve their place in the class for a future term.)
    • Applicants approved for deferral will receive the same institutional awards offered upon admission.
    • Students are not permitted to enroll as a degree-seeking student at another college or university during the time of their deferral.
    • Students who choose to enroll in non-degree gap year program where college credit is earned or as a non-degree student at another college or university must have the coursework pre-approved by the director of admission if they wish to have the coursework considered for transfer.
    • Students may not defer for more than one year. Active members of the armed forces only have special permission to defer for up to two years.
    • Students may not enter the university at a higher level than they were admitted (e.g., transfer rather than first-year entry). Students seeking to enter at a higher level must submit a new application to the appropriate level.
    • Transfer students admitted to Parsons School of Design should first consult an admission counselor to determine if a one semester deferral will impact their time to degree completion.
    • Students who do not adhere to the terms of the deferral policy forfeit their admission and their enrollment deposit. If they wish to seek admission for a future term they must submit a new application, including all application materials.
    • Students approved for deferral will be prompted to reconfirm their intent to enroll early in the semester preceding the one to which they have deferred. Students who do not reconfirm by May 1 for fall entry or December 1 for spring entry will forfeit their seat.

    Please use the online system at my.newschool.edu to pay your admission tuition deposit.

    • First-time users: Look up the net ID for your user name and enter your date of birth as your password (MMDDYY format)
    • Returning users: Use your current log-in information .

  • CERTIFICATION

    I understand that a deferral will only be granted for up to one year from the start of the term I was admitted. After one year has passed I understand that I must submit a new application for admission and submit new application materials. I understand and agree to the terms of this deferral agreement.
