  • Recording Your Activity

Some projects may allow you to build certain transferrable skills and career readiness competencies that companies request. As you complete the internship, you'll be able to understand the competencies and perhaps improve in some of them as a result. Track your effort.

  • These skills matter on and off the clock. Critical thinking is the thoughtful, deliberate process of decision making that helps to prevent flaws. Communication is sending and receiving a message. We all think we are good at communicating until a problems occurs with it, like within text messaging. We have to learn to effectively communicate and work in teams. Collaboration is key in busines. You may be partnered to work with co-workers in your department or interdepartment. Collaboration can also help with innovation and providing different perspectives and ideas.  So, your experiences in those team projects you worked on in your courses that you may have found challenging or not your favorite, may now payoff. Additionally, technology, another needed skill used by even the smallest of businesses and the programs will continue to change. Learning and upskill will be ongoing. Leadership, a component of management is building relationships, a tribe that your support and they support you that hopefully encourages strong performances, buy-in to a vision and company. Overall professionalism cannot be overlooked. According to Houston Chronicle writing contributor, Lisa McQuerry, shares there are rules to professionalism. Those rules, in short include have respect, show common courtesy, employ honest and ethical behaviors, maintain a professional appearance, and carry a positive attitude. The last competency we'll discuss is career management.  You can own your career management. It starts with setting goals, then add a strategy to achieve them, and outing in the effort.  Let's continue.

  • Some training may be provided on-the-job, for the most part, employees are often hired to use a special set of knowledge and skills.

All of the skills matter. They need you to make great ethical decisions, solve problems, be willing to work alone, or within groups with people like and unlike you. You'll need to appreciate diversity and creative ideas.  Everyone wants to feel welcomed and accepted at work, as a person and their thoughts. You may also be asked to share thoughts and ideas of your own. Don't be surprised.

Frequently, assignments, goals, and structure may be provided, but if structure doesn't exist, create it.

Every company within any industry desires professional etiquette and communication skills from its employees. Use professional language, free of slang, profanity, and filibusters. Be respectful, tactful. As you represent a company, management will need to feel at ease knowing they have an employee who is responsible and performs.

Furthermore, although everyone has to start somewhere within the company, leadership can possibly be the long term career goal. Leading can come in the form of leading projects or people.  Take every opportunity to build your career now to secure your tomorrow.

  • Internship Location

Now more than ever our world of work is changing. Companies are using technology more and employees are increasingly working from home or virtually. Managers and employees must learn to perform within the office building and when working from home. Here are a few tips and expectations that some companies may suggest...

    • Use a dedicated work space, like a study, guest room, closet, etc.
    • Remain available as a source of knowledge and share tutorials or training opportunities.
    • Use technology; software apps and project management tools, like Trello, Monday, Hubstaff, and Timely.
    • Establish a short list of expectations, tasks, and goals.
    • Be flexible.
    • Properly manage your breaks.
    • Avoid working in pajamas or lounge wear. Dress professionally, in doubt try business casual.
    • Prepare for meetings or trainings, one-on-one or by group, for instance, once a week to stay connected using Confluence,  Zoom, GotoMeeting,  or Webex programs as a few options.
    • Some companies may coordinate interaction with non-work related teambuilding activities, like trivia games, contests, bingo, and other fun activities. Try apps like, Jeopardy, Monopoly, Kahoot,  and Pictionary.
