PORTRAITS, a Juried Exhibition

Theme: What is a Portrait?
A traditional portrait is a likeness of a person, but beyond the literal it can express essence, memory or personality. The MAC welcomes all 2D and 3D mediums.
Juror/Bio: Sally B. Moore is an Associate Professor of Art at Fitchburg State University. She holds a BFA in painting, an MFA in sculpture from MassArt, and a BA in Theater Arts from Vassar College. Solo sculpture shows include the Barbara Krakow Gallery, Stonehill College, Fitchburg State University, Simmons College, and Phillips Academy Andover. Group shows include DeCordova Annual, and the Fitchburg Art Museum. A commission of eight sculptures for the Ames Hotel in Boston was featured on Channel 5’s Chronicle. She was a three time finalist for the Mass Cultural Council’s Artist Fellowship Award and received an Artist’s Resource Trust grant from the Berkshire Taconic Foundation. Her work has been reviewed in Art Forum, Sculpture Magazine, Art New England, The New York Times, and The Boston Globe and is included in the collections of the DeCordova Museum, Fidelity Investments, Simmons College, and Wellington Management.
The Menino Arts Center is run by the Hyde Park Art Association, a 501c3 nonprofit organization. The MAC serves the neighborhood of Hyde Park, Greater Boston and its suburban counterparts. With over 4000 square feet of space, the MAC is home to a large teaching classroom, seven affordable artist studios, three galleries, an auditorium and the organization’s offices. The mission of the HPAA is to support local artists, make cultural opportunities accessible to families, students, and seniors who may not otherwise have the means to participate; enrich community life, serve as a unifying force in the neighborhood; and help create a more vibrant commercial district.

Submission/Entry Fee:
HPAA Members: $25 for up to three images
Non-Members: $35 for up to three images
Important Dates

Eligibility: This call is open to all artists 18 and over. Your membership must be up-to-date to receive a discount.
Framing, Installation, Size and Label Requirements:
All work must be framed (except museum wrapped canvas) and ready to hang with a wire, ¼ of the height from the top. No clip-on frames or sawtooth hangers. Framed 2D work cannot exceed 60in H x 40in W. Wall sculpture cannot exceed 50in H x 30”W. 3D work cannot exceed 48in H x 16in x 16in and must be accompanied by its own pedestal.
Labels with name, title, medium, and price must be securely fixed to the back of the artwork and removeable to the front.
Sales: All artwork must be for sale. The HPAA retains 30% of the sale price. Please price work accordingly.
Drop-off and Pick-up: All artwork must be hand delivered and picked up at the Menino Arts Center. Artwork not claimed will be considered a donation to the MAC and will be sold or discarded.
Image Upload Guidelines: All images are securely submitted online via our website, www.hpaa-mac.org/exhibits. Create a free Login Account, or Login to your existing account to begin. Further instructions are available in the Calls for Entry section.
Entry Procedure:
1. Save entries as a jpeg at 1200 pixels on the longest side, at 300dpi, in the srgb color space.
2. Name your entries: Title.jpg example: The Green Stripe.jpg
3. Do not put your name in the title of the entry.
Liabilities and Responsibilities: The Menino Arts Center will not be responsible for loss or damage of any artwork, no matter what the cause. By submitting artwork to this exhibition, each artist agrees to this statement. Artwork is not insured by HPAA-MAC during the exhibition. Adequate insurance is the sole responsibility of the artist.
Publicity: By entering this exhibition, the artist gives consent that the submitted images can be used by the Menino Arts Center for reproduction in print and on social media, for publicity and educational purposes, with artist credit given.
