Pre Game Evaluation Criteria
Arrival: Arrive on field at least 30 minutes prior to kickoff. Check game balls; field safety walk; With LJ inspect players for equipment violations, document and report them to head coach for correction prior to game.
Appearance: Uniform neat and clean;
Physical Condition: Excellent, Average, Poor
Field safety check: Ensure game management corrects hazards.
Coin Toss: Lines Captains up on 50-yard line; Escorts players out on time. Takes position opposite Referee; Records results; Goes from position to Home team sideline and then to goal line.
Safety & Equipment Evaluation Criteria
Players legally equipped by rule. Players legally equipped by rule. Kneepads, play cards on wrists, back pads covered. Confirm corrections from pregame made by team. Continue to monitor during game.
During live action: ; Keeps play safe: Calls necessary unsafe plays, illegal helmet contact/targeting; spearing/late hits; unsportsmanlike acts by rule
Dead Ball Officiating
Clean up around ball, penalize late hits and spearing. Keep action clean, spot ball from flanks
Prior to the kick: Position on Home Team side goal line outside sideline; make sure sideline is clean. If onside kick situation, adjusted to receiver's restraining line.
After the kick to umpire’s side; Start clock signal when ball legally touched even with or up field from umpire.
Initial Position: Spot and remain over ball, facing referee until ready for play signal or released by referee. Usually 4 to 7 yards behind Team B’s line and between A’s tackles keeping snap in view; Vary position
After ball is spotted: same position as in running playAfter snap: forward pass, step toward neutral zone Alert for illegal contact on snapper if scrimmage kick formation; Check for ineligibles illegally downfield, illegal touching; be prepared to rule on pass beyond LOS (if unsure, bean bag spot, verify after play over)Turn to cover short passes down middle.
After ball is spotted: Position: 3-5 yards outside the tight end and 3-5 yards behind the kicker, on kicking-leg side; Signal K is in scrimmage-kick formation. Count K players and signal to umpire; After snap: Call fouls behind neutral zone near kicker; if blocked kick, rule on recovery.
After ball crosses neutral zone: slowly move down field, observe blocks, ruling on illegal blocks that affect the play and all personal fouls; Move downfield slowly following kick, responsible for goal line on long returns.Kick out of bounds in flight: Long kick: line up covering official with spot ball crossed sideline by using an outstretched arm.If a foul was called, tell chain crew to stay put.Hustle to the next position for the ensuing ready for play.
PAT, Field Goal
After ball is spotted: Position 5-8 yards deep; Count K players and indicate to Referee that you have counted the kicking team. PAT positioning for swinging gate formation under upright.After snap: Step toward neutral zone read interior linemenCheck action on snapperBe alert if kick crosses neutral zone; assist Referee & cover short/blocked kick; and for action on or by outside offensive linemen;
After Kick: Pivot to view referee’s side of field; observe blocks in side zone; assist in goal line coverage if run develops to Referee’s side.
Procedures – Spots ball accurately and efficiently, keeping track of proper side-to-side field position depending on play type/result & penalty enforcement; use good relay coordination with wings.Communicate efficiently with Referee after/between plays, in executing ‘Ready’Clear signals, clock management; proper whistle usage
Take forward stake at place of measurement in position that does not obstruct view from press box.Extend the chain; hold stake near ball until Referee makes decision.
