  • Policy Statement on Sexuality

    Ravencrest Chalet
  • As our society's understanding of sexuality has been shifting away from biblical truth, we at Ravencrest Chalet believe that it is necessary to have an official policy statement on sexuality. This is not for the purpose of bringing condemnation to any individual who is struggling or has struggled with sexual immorality, but rather it is intended to protect our community as we operate and make decisions based on biblical truth rather than secular morals. We recognize that as human beings we all struggle with sin and shame, and our desire is that this would be a community where we can walk with each other in a manner that points one another towards the Lord's holiness, but that also encourages one another to receive the Lord's grace.

As a Christian community, Ravencrest Chalet teaches and expects that all faculty, staff, interns and students will serve as examples of God-honoring excellence. This Policy Statement has been adopted by the acting Board of Directors of Ravencrest Chalet with that basic principle in mind and to emphasize that all faculty, staff, interns and students will be held to a standard of exemplary conduct in the area of human sexuality consistent with biblical standards.

These standards and principles are set forth in Scripture and include:

    1. We believe that God wonderfully and unchangeably creates each person as male or female*. These two distinct, complementary genders together reflect the image and nature of God. (Gen 1:26-27; Psalm 139:13-14)

*We acknowledge the intersex condition, which we consider distinct from gender reassignment

    2. We believe that biblical marriage refers to the uniting of one man and one woman in a single, exclusive union, as delineated in Scripture. (Gen 2:18-25; 1 Tim 3:2, 15-16) We believe that God intends sexual intimacy to occur only between a man and a woman who are married to each other. (1 Cor 6:18; 7:2-25; Heb 13:4; Rom 1:26-27)

    3. We believe that God has commanded that no intimate sexual activity be engaged in outside of marriage between a man and a woman. We believe that any form of sexual immorality (including adultery, fornication, LGBTQ+ [lesbian, homosexual, bisexual, transsexual] conduct, bestiality, incest, and pornography) is sinful. (Matt 15:18-20; 1 Cor 6:9-10; Lev 18:6; Lev 18:22-23)

    4. We believe that in order to preserve the function and integrity of Ravencrest Chalet as part of the local body of Christ, and to provide a biblical role model to the Ravencrest students, friends, and the community, it is imperative that all persons at Ravencrest Chalet in any capacity, or who serve as volunteers, agree to and abide by this Policy Statement on Sexuality. (Matt 5:16)

    5. We believe that every person should be afforded compassion, love, kindness, respect, and dignity. (Mark 12:28-31; Luke 6:31) Hateful criticism and harassing behavior or attitudes directed toward any individual are unacceptable and not in accord with Scripture nor the policy of Ravencrest Chalet. We believe that God offers redemption and restoration to all who confess and repent of their sin, seeking His mercy and forgiveness through Jesus Christ. (Acts 3:19-21; Rom 10:9-10; 1 Tim 1:15-16)

For all Ravencrest Chalet faculty, staff, interns, and students, sexual intimacy must only be expressed within the context of marriage between one man and one woman. Violations of this policy include but are not limited to: sexual relations between unmarried persons or persons of the same sex, adulterous relationships, bestiality, and pornography. Failure to comply with this policy will be evaluated, and can result in getting help and accountability, disciplinary action, or termination from Ravencrest Chalet, and we would seek to provide accountability in this area.

**We understand the pervasive impact pornography is currently having on many in our culture, and likely upon many who read this document. If this is something you struggle with, our staff is available to walk with and pray for you.

In signing this Policy Statement, I hereby agree to abide by the standards and principles stated above.

    Sexuality Policy
  • Point 1

    • Gen 1:26-27 - Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth." So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
      • God's original creation consisted of two genders, male and female, both of whom were created in His image.
    • Psalm 139:13-14 - For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.
      • Even after His original creation, God specifically knitted David together in his mother's womb. Since this was written as a Psalm to be sung by multitudes, we can assume that God "fearfully and wonderfully" knit each one of us together and our form isn't a mistake.

    Point 2

    • Gen 2:18-25 - Then the LORD God said, "It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him." Now out of the ground the LORD God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him. So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. And the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. Then the man said, "This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man." Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.
      • In God's original perfect creation, He formed one woman (Eve) for one man (Adam).
    • 1 Tim 3:2, 15-16 - Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach... I am writing these things to you so that, if I delay, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of the truth.
      • Paul wrote that overseers (Elders) should be the husband of one wife, as opposed to many. He then clarifies in verses 15-16 to show that this is how everyone in the church should live.
    • 1 Cor 6:18 - Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body.
      • Sexual immorality (Greek: porneia) refers to a myriad of sexual sins. Paul urges the Corinthian Church (and by extension all believers) to flee from sexual immorality.
    • 1 Cor 7:2-5 - But because of the temptation to sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband. The husband should give to his wife her conjugal rights, and likewise the wife to her husband. For the wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. Likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. Do not deprive one another, except perhaps by agreement for a limited time, that you may devote yourselves to prayer; but then come together again, so that Satan may not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.
      • Following Paul's train of thought makes it clear that he does not include marital sex in the category of sexual immorality. Rather, Paul commands for a husband and wife to "not deprive one another" of sex, and to avoid the temptation to fall into sexual immorality.
    • Heb 13:4 - Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous.
      • The author of Hebrews seems to hold a high view of marriage and commands that, "the marriage bed be undefiled" i.e. that there be no adultery.
    • Rom 1:26-27 - For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things. Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen. For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; and the men likewise committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.
      • Paul argues in Romans 1 that, in response to human idolatry, God gave the idolators up to "impurity" and "dishonorable passions", specifically homosexuality, as a "penalty for their error." This passage affirms that homosexuality is not part of God's original design but is "impure" and therefore sinful.

    Point 3

    • Matt 15:18-20 - But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person. For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander. These are what defiles a person. But to eat with unwashed hands does not defile anyone.
      • Jesus describes how a person is "defiled" and in his list is sexual immorality (porneia), thus making the case that sexual immorality is sinful.
    • 1 Cor 6:9-10 - Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.
      • Again, Paul includes the sexually immoral in his list of those who "will not inherit the kingdom of God." Thus, it can be concluded that sexual immorality is sinful.
    • Lev 18:6 - None of you shall approach any one of his close relatives to uncover nakedness. I am the LORD.
      • The Law specifically prohibits incest.
    • Lev 18:22-23 - you shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination. And you shall not lie with any animal and so make yourself unclean with it, neither shall any woman give herself to an animal to lie with it: it is a perversion.
      • The Law specifically prohibits homosexuality as well as bestiality.

    Point 4

    • Matt 5:16 - In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
      • Those who follow Christ are called by Jesus to be examples to the world, so that they will glorify God. If sexual immorality is indeed sinful, then engaging in sexual immorality would hinder this purpose.

    Point 5

    • Mark 12:28-31 - And one of the scribes came up and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, asked him, "Which commandment is the most important of all?" Jesus answered, "The most important is, 'Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.' The second is this: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no other commandment greater than these."
      • Jesus said that the second greatest commandment is to love your neighbor as yourself. Love is commanded by God.
    • Luke 6:31 - And as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them.
      • Again, Jesus affirms that we are to respect and care for each other as he commands his disciples to treat others as they would wish to be treated.
    • Acts 3:19-21 - Repent therefore, and turn again, that your sins may be blotted out, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that he may send the Christ appointed for you, Jesus, whom heaven must receive until the time for restoring all the things about which God spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets long ago.
      • As God's Church was beginning, the exhortation from the apostles to the world was consistently to repent. In Acts 3, Peter makes it clear that if the people repent, God will respond to their repentance.
    • Rom 10:9-10 - because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.
      • In Paul's letter to the Romans, he explains that God is not withholding His salvation, but rather He is ready to extend salvation to those who confess that Jesus is Lord and believe that God raised Him from the dead.
    • 1 Tim 1:15-16 - The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost. But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life.
