The United Women in Business Foundation (UWIB) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the professional and personal development of women in the business world. UWIB’s mission is to foster success for its members by providing educational programs, mentorship and networking connections, and leadership and growth opportunities. Established in 2010 by a group of young women seeking to build a collaborative network of peers and thought leaders, UWIB aims to provide guidance to members as they strive to achieve their goals and excel as business professionals. Board of Director Expectations (All Board Positions)
UWIB Wide Responsibilities
- Events
- UWIB plans and coordinates Programming, Membership and Philanthropy events throughout the year. As a board member, it is an expectation that you attend as many of these events as possible.
- In addition to attending the UWIB events, you will be required to support/volunteer prior, during and after the events. Responsibilities include but not limited to: printing event materials, running the sign in table, presenting or facilitating discussions, live tweeting and post-event write-ups.
- All Board members (National and Chapter) must attend a majority of UWIB events.
- Teamwork/Accountability
- Collaboration and teamwork is extremely important for the overall success of the board. There is an expectation that we work as a team and help out fellow board members. Positions are not siloed and each board member is expected to support all positions as well as be communicative about their initiatives.
- Members of the board are expected to be responsive to email or preferred method of communication (24-48 hour turnaround period)
Monthly Board Meeting Attendance
- On an annual basis, each member of the Board of Directors is expected to attend 8 out of 12 monthly meetings or (66%). If a Board of Directors member must be absent from a meeting, their announcements should be sent via e-mail to the President and VP Operations 48 hours prior to the team call. In addition, absences should not be consecutive. This participation level is required to remain in good standing as a member of the Board of Directors.
- Board members must attend other necessary calls as needed to support the National BOD or Chapter.
Special Meetings
- Transition Meeting: Board members are required to attend an annual transition meeting in their respective Chapter location (Washington, DC, Chicago, or New York City). Transition consists of passing knowledge share as well as any documentation relevant for the role.
- Annual Retreat: Board members are required to attend an annual midyear retreat in the summer.
Time Commitment
- As a member of the UWIB Board of Directors, there is a minimum 5 hour per week time commitment on average.
Financial Commitment
- There is a $50 suggested donation for all Board members.
- As UWIB is a non-profit, each board member should expect to cover their own costs for transportation, including: train, subway, and taxi expenses when traveling to and from UWIB functions.
- The organization will, however, reimburse any individual that incurs incidental business expenses such as postage, printing, and any materials used for the organization.

- You are expected to transition your position to the incoming board member
NATIONAL BOARD POSITIONS
President (National Position)
- Have a deep understanding of the UWIB brand and provide oversight for all activity to ensure alignment to the UWIB ideals and brand.
- Work closely with the Chapter Presidents to provide broad oversight for the board. This includes, but is not limited to, monthly calls, providing guidance on major Chapter initiatives, and personnel decisions.
- Working with the National Board to identify potential collaboration between Chapters including best practices, trends and marketing opportunities.
- With the VP of Finance, provide approval over use of National Board funds, as well identify fundraising opportunities for the organization and setting budgets.
- Manage board cohesiveness, which includes ensuring all positions are filled, each position is supported and coaching Chapter Presidents through personnel management.
- Encourage social interaction between members of the Board of Directors.
- Meet with members of the Board of Directors individually on an as-needed basis.
- Work closely with the Chapter Presidents and National Board to direct long term strategy of the organization including identifying potential partnerships that can be applied across Chapters.
- Organize and execute board wide meetings in coordination with the EVP and VP of Operations, including annual board retreat and transition meeting.
- Represent the organization to external partners.
- Oversee any internal initiatives including, but not limited to, expansion, updated branding, marketing materials, update of organization systems, etc.
Executive Vice President (National Position)
- Plan the Board Kick Off Meeting and Transition between to the new UWIB Board of Directors
- Plan the annual board retreat with the President
- Work closely with the President to write and develop UWIB’s Annual Report.
- Work closely with the President on long term strategic goals
- Perform the duties of the National President in his or her absence
- Collect monthly meeting minutes
- Operate as the National Board point-of-contact for specific initiatives. Past examples are
- Programming strategy and Programming Pillar implementation
- Branding alignment across chapters
- Chapter expansion initiative
- Oversee all UWIB chapters' programming, membership, and philanthropy events by coordinating/leading monthly Council calls.
- Work closely with the National President to organize National Board Retreat, Transition Meeting, and Board elections
VP of Finance (National Position)
- Prepare the organization’s annual budget, budget projections and micro event budgeting.
- Maintain deep knowledge of financial accounting practices for nonprofits and complete all regulatory submissions in a timely and accurate manner.
- Track the organization’s expenses to assist with future planning and preparation of the organization’s annual 990-PF return.
- Monitor the organization’s bank account and mailbox including balance review, reimbursement processing, check deposit and receipts.
- Work closely with Chapter Presidents to maintain database of UWIB donations and sponsorships.
- Ensure that the organization meets all legal requirements and filing deadlines and assist the President with timely and accurate submissions to the Department of State and Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
VP of Marketing and Communications (National Position)
- Oversee and coordinate marketing strategy of the organization.
- Manage the organizational brand and ensure that marketing materials and communications are consistent with branding, including cohesiveness between Chapter communications.
- Create all national UWIB publications.
- Serve as a liaison between the organization and the media.
- Oversees the VP of Digital Media, leading training for all board members on tools, brand and marketing techniques. This includes eventbrite, all email communication including event invitations and monthly newsletters, twitter, instagram, facebook, Linkedin, wordpress, and hootsuite.
- Manages social media platform for the organization including creating content for twitter, Facebook, and instagram, solely managing the organization’s LinkedIn page, and approves all social media scheduling.
- Working with VP of Digital Media creates marketing materials for general UWIB use and specific events; including any branding updates to UWIB business cards, promotional items, and signage.
- Manages and updates UWIB website, including integrating EventBrite, MailChimp, and Wordpress for better metric tracking.
- Approve all external communication.
VP of Operations (National Position)
- Organize and execute board wide meetings in coordination with the National President and Chapter Presidents
- Maintain, review, and update important organizational documents such as corporate bylaws and amendments.
- Oversee critical logistics of Board of Director meetings including scheduling, creation of agendas and writing minutes.
- Develop and implement operational tools and processes to help the organization function efficiently
- Manage the board of director listservs.
- Organize and oversee the board election and transition process.
CHAPTER BOARD POSITIONS
(Current UWIB Chapters: Washington D.C., New York City, and Chicago)
Chapter President (Chapter Specific Positions)
- Serve as the main leadership for their Chapter, ensuring that the chapter is functioning effectively, building membership, and identifying potential opportunities for growth.
- Work closely with the EVP and National President to provide board oversight of the Chapter.
- Serve as the main liaison to the National Board, representing the Chapter in National Board meetings and communicating national decisions to the Chapter Board of Director.
- Approve event concepts and encourage continuous growth that meets chapter opportunities for grow.
- Manage and resolve chapter-specific questions and issues.
- In coordination with the Chapter VP, organize annual Chapter board retreat and Chapter-specific transition meeting.
- Lead and execute monthly Chapter Board calls.
- Encourage social interaction between members of the Board of Directors.
- Meet with members of the Board of Directors individually on an as-needed basis.
- Oversee all programming, philanthropy, and membership initiatives, providing support as necessary.
- Serve as the representative to high profile partners and speakers, communicating the UWIB brand and supporting their involvement with UWIB.
- Drive Chapter growth and momentum throughout the year, leading the Board of Directors in scheduling events and community involvement.
Chapter Vice President (Chapter Specific Positions)
- Perform duties of the President in their absence including but not limited to attending National Board meetings, lead Chapter board calls, etc.
- Work with the National VP of Operations to maintain content of UWIB’s Google Drive as well as any internal databases for the Chapter.
- Create agenda and minutes of monthly board calls to be uploaded to the Google Drive.
- Work with respective VPs to maintain and update Chapter UWIB databases, including but not limited to the Chapter calendar, UWIB inventory and business card nees, donation database, partnership database etc.
- The VP of Operations may also be required to take ownership of additional tasks or initiatives as needed. This could include supporting the President with board management, leading specific events (such as year end celebrations), providing feedback for newsletters or eventbrite invitations, helping at programming events etc.
- Provide support in onboarding any Board of Directors, specifically when out of the standard election cycle.
VP of Programming (Chapter Specific Positions)
- In coordination with co-VP of Programming develop programming calendar and strategy and plan all professional development initiatives of the organization.
- Lead speaker outreach, identifying leaders in industry, community, arts, etc that align with programming initiatives. This includes maintaining the partnership database, potentially cold emailing or calling speakers and coordinating with speakers for day of logistics.
- Plan and coordinate all professional development events of the organization, including but not limited to all event specific communication, day of logistics, and follow up with attendees and partners.
- Work closely with VP of Community Relations to secure event donations and sponsorships for professional development events.
- Maintain records of past events – contacts, pricing, quotes, attendance - in partnership database.
- Enhance and create with the VP of Digital Media professional development materials for programming events.
- Identify potential partners and maintain relationship on behalf to the organization.
VP of Community Relations (Chapter Specific Positions)
- Work closely with the fellow Programming Board Members and Programming Committee to develop overall programming calendar and strategy.
- For each programming event, secure location, sponsorships and donations for events; including but not limited to event space, food donations, and swag.
- Identify any potential partnerships with other organizations, companies, universities that may supporting UWIB programming through donation or co-hosting.
- Maintain the partnership database for Chapter, including potential partners and points of contact.
- Work closely with VP of Finance to maintain a detailed database of all donations and gifts in-kind.
VP of Digital Media (Chapter Specific Positions)
- In coordination with co-VP of Digital Media, serve as an online community manager for the Chapter's social media platforms (twitter, instagram, facebook).
- Attends Marketing Committee with the VP of Marketing and Communications and other Chapter’s VP of Digital Media and submits status report of initiatives to VP of Marketing and Communications. Identify marketing best practices and maintain UWIB brand.
- Work closely with the Marketing Committee to create a natural extension of member learning into the online space for specific chapter. This includes but not limited: live tweeting at events, regular social media posts, and marketing of upcoming events
- Work closely with Marketing Committee to review and update the organization’s website.
- Monitor social media analytics to benchmark and enhance the organization’s online presence.
- Creates, edits, and sends chapter specific newsletters.
- Contributes material for the organization’s national newsletters.
- Create additional marketing material for chapter events, such as blog posts, updating the website, and reaching out to PR contacts.
- Take on digital media/marketing initiatives that will expand the organization's online presence.
- Maintain and update membership and subscriber lists as necessary for each UWIB event.
VP of Membership (Chapter Specific Positions)
- Oversee all member-related initiatives including: recruitment strategy, application management, participation and attendance, and relationship building.
- Communicate with the organization’s chapter membership base on an as-needed basis.
- Serve as a liaison between the Board of Directors and chapter members.
- Plan and execute social membership events, including but not limited to UWIBrunches, fitness classes, networking events, etc.
- Identify potential partnerships with other local women’s organizations to expand membership through co-sponsored events.
- Work with VP of Philanthropy and VP of Programing to identify events that can combine both professional and membership initiatives.
- Focus on relationship building between general members and the Board of Directors to strengthen the UWIB community.
- Serve as Board of Director liaison between the members and the Board of Directors to discover membership interests and response to current programming and offerings.
VP of Philanthropy (Chapter Specific Positions)
- Develop and maintain philanthropy partners.
- Plan and coordinate philanthropy events for members, including, but not limited to, quarterly volunteer events.
- Coordinate with VP of Programming and VP of Membership to identify and manage potential philanthropic tie-ins for events, such as donation drives.
- Build relationships with other charitable organizations and women’s groups.
- Manage Eventbrite creation and social media promotion for Philanthropy events.
- Maintain database of philanthropy contacts and volunteering opportunities.
