    Volunteer Application

Volunteers with a variety of skills are needed to ensure the success of our shelter. Your help is GREATLY appreciated. Please take the time to fill out this application and read and sign the agreement. This information will help us identify the volunteer duties that you would enjoy most and keep you posted on new projects. After we review your information, a GGOH representative will contact you to discuss volunteer opportunities that are compatible with your skills and experience. (Communication is typically done by email so please ensure you provide an active email address for this purpose.)
  • Individuals, groups, adults and school age children are welcome to participate in volunteer activities. If you would like GGOH do a presentation to your group, we would be happy to do so.

Minimum age for kids to work with the cats at our facility is 16 years old, for dogs it is 18. A parent or legal guardian will be required to sign legal documents to allow a minor to volunteer at our facility unsupervised and have direct contact with our rescue animals.

For schools, scouts, 4H, or any kid groups, you can get ideas from our Kid's FUNdraising Ideas

  • Dog Volunteering

NOTE:  For insurance reasons and safety, 2 training sessions are required before you are allowed to handle dogs. You must be at least 18 yrs. old to work with our dogs.

Open hours are mornings 8am-12noon and evenings 4-8pm.

Vet transporting is mostly to and from New Richmond Vet and Glenwood City Vet.  On occasion, we need to take a pet to a specialist in the Twin Cities. Most appointments are planned but occasionally we do have emergencies to Animal Emergency Clinic in Oakdale.

  • Cat Volunteering

NOTE: For insurance reasons and safety, a training session is required before you are allowed to handle cats.

Open hours are mornings 8am-12noon and evenings 4-8pm.

On occasion we may require longer hours - you are not required to stay, but it would be appreciated if your schedule allows it.  Scenarios that could potentially lead to longer than normal hours:  volunteer shortage, cat emergencies or walk-in visits taking away from general cleaning, unexpected new arrivals, etc.

General cat room duties include the following:

Litter box scooping & cleaning, replenishing foods and providing fresh water, washing food & water bowls, replacing dirty bedding, sweeping, washing down walls, mopping floors, cleaning windows, and moving (most are on wheels) & cleaning cages.

Socializing with cats can be done while performing cleaning duties (they like to help!) or, after all rooms have been cleaned.

  • Event Fundraisers:  Every event always needs your help in some way. Each event is unique so the list below is basically just a general list to give us an idea of what you are interested in.  As an event unfolds, more specific volunteer duties will be posted on our website and FaceBook page.

  • Grant Writing

GGOH does not recieve support from St Croix county.  We depend on individuals and local company giving to keep our doors open.  It is a daily struggle to keep going financially.  Our facility is always full and every cat and dog that enters our facility will have a vet bill.  Our  building is bulging at seams with all the intakes.  We are in desperate need of someone to search for and write grants for us to help support our efforts.

Please call or email us if you can help or have ideas in this area of funding opportunities.

  • Note - You will be contacted by email in regard to your volunteer application.  Our volunteers each have their own GGOH email address that will contain "GGOH" within the address itself.  Please monitor your general and spam boxes for communication from us.  Initial response time is typically 5-7 days after your application has been received but be aware as everyone at GGOH is themselves a volunteer, response times can vary depending on personal commitments/schedules.
