  • Welcome to Bulgaria

  • Geography

Bulgaria has a very diverse terrain ranging from the snow capped peaks of the Balkan Mountains to the sunny coast of the Black Sea. In the heart of the country is Rila National Park which is among the largest and most valuable protected areas in Europe.  The national park contains 120 glacial lakes and Musala Peak which is the highest summit in the Balkan Peninsula at 2925 meters.
  • Holidays

There is a strong Orthodox Christian history in Bulgaria. For this reason, Bulgarians have unique traditions during the Christmas and Easter holidays. Christmas Eve is celebrated with a feast that comes at the end of the Advent season. Walnuts are included in the traditional feast as a sign of luck for the new year. Each person cracks a walnut, and if it's a good nut then it's a sign of good luck for the coming year. If it's a bad nut, it's thought to be a sign of a bad year ahead. During the Easter holiday, the first eggs to be painted are traditionally died red and kept until the next Easter as a sign of good luck and prosperity. The rest of the eggs are died other colors and decorated with Orthodox designs.
  • Festivals

Bulgaria has a rich history of folk traditions that are celebrated locally through festivals throughout the year. Some of the most popular festivals are The Festival of the Roses in Kazanluk, Nestinarstvo (fire dancing) performed in the Strandzha region,  The Zheravna Festival of the National Costume where locals dress up to scare away evil spirits, and the Rozhen Festival near Rozhen Peak which aims to popularize Bulgarian folk music and dance. One fun fact is that bagpipes (locally referred to as gaida) are a common instrument in Bulgarian folk music. While the bagpipe is generally thought of in association with Celtic traditions, the giada has a long history in Bulgarian culture.

  • Paul and Judy have served in Bulgaria for over 24 years. They live in the capital city, Sofia, which sits at the base of Vitosha Mountain. They first came to Bulgaria as music missionaries, but quickly felt called to minister to the orphan population in Bulgaria. Together, they founded Bulgarian Child, Inc which exists to help meet the needs of thousands of children living in state- run institutions in Bulgaria. They meet both the basic needs such as food, clothes/shoes, and medicine, and specific needs such as surgeries, special equipment, and training programs. One product of Bulgarian Child is the Learning Center Borovtsi (LCB). LCB is a short-term residential program for at-risk men, many who come out of the orphanage system, where they can find professional training and Biblical truth to support them moving forward into their future.
