Our Performing Arts CSA program is unique. The inspiration came from an organization doing amazing work in St. Paul, Minnesota – Springboard for the Arts. They piloted and packaged the concept of the Visual Arts CSA, now present all over the country and even here in Pittsburgh. The New Hazlett Theater’s version is currently the only known Performing Arts Program of its kind in the United States and potentially beyond. This is exciting new territory and admittedly, as a result, we continue to learn and improve with every artist we collaborate with.
Part of that improvement is clearly communicating with you our motivations and goals going forward:
-We value and support creative inquiry. We believe in ambition and risk.
-The CSA program is designed to support Artists in Western Pennsylvania make new works not yet performed elsewhere.
-“New” is one of many challenging words that can be difficult to pin down in the performing arts. We rely on our independent review panel (made up of active artists) to help us review each submission and consider their context and merit.
-These selected new works acknowledge and utilize the physical footprint of the theater, in hopes of giving each piece a powerful site specific energy not found in other venues.
-Our goal is to provide the tools and resources required to take your practice to the next level. We believe the results benefit the artist as well as the CSA program, the patron in the seat and the arts community beyond.
-The CSA program is open to any style of performance. The success of your application rests on your clarity in helping us understand how the proposed project is unique, feasible and an opportunity for you to grow professionally.
