THO 2019 Research Program in Turkey

Energy in Turkey: Technologies, Markets, Policies and U.S. Bilateral Relations
Overview
Turkey is presently one of the most dynamic countries to watch on the energy scene. Though historically known for its geostrategic role as an energy transit country, Turkey commenced its own oil and gas exploration in the Black Sea and Mediterranean Sea in 2018. Continued reforms in the domestic electricity market, incentives for renewable and distributed electricity generation, and promotion of the green energy technology industry have attracted billions in foreign investment in the energy sector. Ambitious policies for energy efficiency improvements and sustainable urban transport are the result of Turkey’s international and domestic commitments to sustainability. As Turkey continues to diversify its portfolio of renewable and conventional energy resources, energy plays a key role in bilateral relations and private sector ties between the United States and Turkey.
The THO Research Program in Turkey is a competitive, annual, all-expenses-paid research trip in Turkey for young researchers between the ages of 21-35. In 2019, THO’s Research Program offers selected outstanding university students, recent graduates, and experts an in-depth look at Turkey’s energy policies, markets and technologies in light of U.S. –Turkish relations.
Program participants will attend meetings, excursions, and fieldwork on the theme of Turkey’s energy policy, markets and technologies. The topics covered will illustrate the interconnected relationship between electricity markets and renewable energy investments, energy efficiency and sustainability, urban energy use, and energy and climate policies. At the end of the program, students will have a comprehensive understanding of Turkey’s broader energy scene and the areas of common interest between Turkey and the U.S. on energy issues.
During the program, participants are required to conduct a modest research project on a subject of their choosing in relation to the program theme. One outstanding researcher will be awarded a small grant to carry out a more in-depth collaborative research project with peers in Turkey.
Upon return to the U.S., participants will complete their projects by November 30th, 2019. These projects will be published on THO’s website and promoted through THO’s networks. THO will also organize public events in D.C. or elsewhere in the U.S. to highlight the projects and/or the experiences of the participants.
Please note: This program is not an officially accredited course. Participants must individually appeal to their university to earn credit. THO will provide any necessary paperwork.
THO is committed to providing access to the program for all qualified individuals who wish to apply. We welcome qualified applicants with disabilities regardless of whether said applicants need accommodation to complete this application or participate in this program.
