  • Willpower? No!

"If we could will ourselves out of addiction we would have done it a long time ago." Unknown
  • People who are addicted have a tremendously powerful will, are extremely intelligent, creative, and true survivors. Just research a little and you will see the incredible human beings who are addicts in recovery or who have suffered at the hands of addiction. Our willpower is amazing in all aspects of our lives; however, it become useless when it comes to not engaging in our addiction. Of course, it comes in handy when participating in healthy recovery efforts, but in the direct act of stopping our use and behavior, it's as useless as trying to stop yourself from messing on yourself when you have diarrhea. Sorry about the grotesque and vivid example but I want to make my point clear. Believe me, if we could have willed or thought ourselves out of addiction, we would not need any treatment for recovery. Please understand that you are not going to will yourself out of your addiction.
