Grant Category: Literacy
Funding Goal: $1500
The Pre-K Book Club will be a program that promotes reading at home with families. Students and their families will be required to read 10 books per month and record it on a reading log. When the student turns in their completed reading log, they will receive a related to the PIE thematic
unit for that month.
Because Pre-K is an intervention program, most of our families qualify for a full-day Pre-K program because of their socio-economic status. Families in poverty often experience stress in providing for their children. Books are a luxury, not a necessity. Approximately 74% of our pre-K population at Deerfield Elementary School receives free or reduced lunch.
Goals of the program are:
• Promote reading as a family with age appropriate books.
• Provide students exposure to quality literature and promote book and print awareness, as well as eyes on text in their homes.
• Promote a love of reading among our Pre-K students and discussion among
the students by reading a common book.
