Established in 1995, the National Association for Civilian Oversight of Law Enforcement (NACOLE) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that works to enhance accountability and transparency in policing and build community trust through civilian oversight. More information about NACOLE is available at www.nacole.org.
To further our mission, we hold an annual conference that brings together the growing community of civilian oversight practitioners, law enforcement officials, journalists, elected officials, students, community members, and others to meet and exchange information and ideas about issues facing civilian oversight and law enforcement. The annual conference typically draws 400-500 people from across the United States and around the world seeking training, professional development, and networking opportunities in the field of civilian oversight.
NACOLE is seeking proposals for workshops, panels, and presentations for its 24th Annual Conference, to be held in St. Petersburg, Florida, from September 30-October 4, 2018. Please note the following when putting your proposal together:
Electronic submission is required for all proposals. Should you have any questions, please contact NACOLE’s Director of Training and Education, Ms. Cameron McEllhiney, at
STRUCTURE OF PRESENTATION:
As a general rule, each conference session lasts 1.5 hours, including a question and answer period. Presentations may consist of one speaker or a panel of two or more speakers; however, four speakers is the maximum. NACOLE requires a period for audience questions that will last a minimum of 20 minutes - or a comparable method for audience engagement. Please note that the final decision on structure and panelist participation resides with the NACOLE Board of Directors. Therefore, those submitting proposals may be asked to make minor changes to their presentation in order to better fit within the parameters of the overall NACOLE program.
PRESENTATION AND HANDOUT MATERIALS:
NACOLE will issue all conference handout materials to attendees in an electronic format. This information will also be used for application for continuing education accreditation. All accepted proposals must provide handout materials to participants relevant to their presentation.
These materials must be submitted to NACOLE electronically in advance of the conference. You will receive special instructions for complying with this requirement upon being notified that your proposal was selected. NACOLE does not provide printed materials for individual sessions. Panelists who wish to provide printed materials along with their presentation may do so at their own cost.
SELECTION PROCESS & OTHER INFORMATION:
The NACOLE Board of Directors makes the final decisions on all proposals. All decisions will be announced in writing, no later than February 28, 2018. In reviewing proposals, the Board looks to ensure the overall conference program addresses the basic skills and standard areas of proficiency necessary for the practice of civilian oversight. These “Core Competencies” are a required checklist, indicating the areas addressed by the proposed panel or workshop. Please note that all requests (i.e., travel reimbursement, lodging, fee waivers, A/V, etc.) must be made at the time of submission. Acceptance of proposal IS NOT a guarantee that NACOLE that all requests will be honored. Further information regarding the status of specific panel and speaker requests will be given at the time of acceptance notification.
NACOLE may solicit additional information from the submitter as it reviews the proposal. In addition, NACOLE reserves the right to reject late or incomplete proposals or request changes including, but not limited to, substitute or additional panel members or topics.
